Elementary Building Additions
The additions onto the elementary building are “on time and under budget”! The school district is anticipating 95% completion by July 1st, the furniture being delivered and installed the week of July 19th and 100% completion by August 6th. The district’s hope is to have the teachers moved into the classrooms and be ready for the children by the first day of school (August 25, 2010).
These additions are completely financed through the Medina County sales tax.
School Finances are NOT like Home Finances
In your home finances your money may be in multiple checking or saving accounts and you are free to move money around to buy a car or pay your bills from any account you wish. Schools, on the other hand, are mandated by law to follow the Uniform School Accounting Manual. Though there are four funds (accounts/checkbooks if you will) the two main ones which we hear about most often are Permanent/Capital Improvement and Operating Funds.
· Permanent/Capital Improvement Fund (Medina County sales tax) can only be used for building improvements, buses, fixed assets, equipment and textbooks. It cannot be used to pay bills, teachers’ salaries, etc…
· The Operating Fund, on the other hand, can be used for anything.
The one half percent Medina County sales tax which was passed in 2007 states that all revenue from the sales tax must go to the school’s Permanent/Capital Improvement fund and cannot go into the Operating Fund to pay for the operations of a school district. This is law and cannot be changed. This is the main different between school finances and your home finances. You can control which fund you use to pay for things. Schools by law must follow the guidelines set forth by the state.
Thanks to the Medina County sales tax, Buckeye is able to solve some of the needs of the district such as overcrowding in the elementary, replacing old busses, updating technology and building a field house to provide restrooms, locker rooms, storage, and more for our track/soccer complex.
Levy Meeting
We Need Your Help!
There will be a meeting on Thursday, February 18th in the high school auditorium starting at 6:30 p. m. for anyone interested in assisting with the levy campaign. It is also an opportunity to learn the facts about the levy and ask questions. I hope you will find the time to attend and help to ensure the quality of education in the Buckeye School District.
